American Woodcock

The American Woodcock, Scolopax minor, is a sandpiper found in open woodlands and moist fields from southern Canada to the Gulf coast. It is well known for courtship flights called sky dances performed in the evening and at sunrise during mating season. This one ventured out from the woods in the snow on the side of a road near Seabreeze, New Jersey, as I was sitting there looking at Eastern Meadowlarks. |
